Seb’s Projects India in collaboration with Corporater to improve access to clean water for communities in Jawadhi Hills.
The Jawadhi Hills is a tribal area in the northern part of the state of Tamil Nadu in southeastern India. Due to a lack of proper infrastructure and economic resources, majority of the Jawadhi Hills population lives in extreme poverty. One of the contributing poverty factors is a limited access to safe water.
The main source of water for the people of Jawadhi Hills are from open wells, natural springs, and bore wells. Bore water is accessed by drilling the ground and pumping water from the aquifers – a water-holding permeable rock that holds groundwater. Due to a low electrical voltage, low water yield, and improper installation, the existing bore wells do not provide a sufficient amount of water to sustain the local communities.

To survive, the people of Jawadhi Hills often resort to drinking unsafe water, putting themselves and their loved ones at risk of waterborne diseases. Much of open-source water can be polluted by human and cattle defecates or affected by naturally occurring chemicals making it unfit for intake. For instance, most of the water sources in Jawadhi Hills have more than 10.000 E. coli bacteria per 100ml water when it should be less than 1 E. coli. Excess E. coli can be the source of bacterial infections UTI, diarrhea, and pneumonia. In severe cases, waterborne disease and infections may lead to blindness and even death.
For water to be safe, it must go through a purification process.
Together we can make a difference
Corporater is committed to making a social impact for those in need – bring light, where life seems lost, bright light where there is darkness, and bring increase where things seem to decrease.
“We recognize that access to clean water is essential for people’s health and wellbeing,” said Tor Inge Vasshus, CEO of Corporater. “It is the cornerstone of helping communities thrive and prosper.”
“We recognize that access to clean water is essential for people’s health and wellbeing.”
Together with Seb’s Projects India, Corporater has committed to provide clean water systems to eight villages in Jawadhi Hills. The project will help a total of 720 families (approx. 5,400 people). Seb’s Projects India secured financing for one village, and Corporater will fund the rest. The goal of the project is to improve the quality of life for people living in Jawadhi Hills by providing them with access to clean water suitable for drinking, bathing, cooking, and cleaning.
The project will be supported by Tata Swach, which will provide a filtering system free of charge. The filtering system eliminates bacteria, cysts, parasites and removes other common pollutants. The system does not need electricity to operate, only gravity forces.
The filtration process has 3 stages:
- Filtering sediments > 10 µm in size to remove dust and sediments
- Filtering with activated Carbon to remove color and bad taste and odor
- Ultrafiltration to remove bacteria, virus and protozoan cysts larger than 0.01 µm
Corporater is to provide funding for the infrastructure, which includes the construction of piping, storage tanks, and tapping station. The project is accompanied by hygiene awareness training to help educate people about the impact of drinking unpurified water. People will have to pay a little for the water to cover the system operation and maintenance. The system will be implemented and tested in one village before a rollout to the other seven villages.
In order for the project to be deemed a success, it must meet the 4 As:
- Available
- Accessible
- Affordable
- Accountable
We are excited about this project and glad that we can make a difference for over 5,000 people.
