A Strategic objective is a main area an organization wishes to focus on, a statement of strategic intent, a landmark to be reached. A Strategic objective states how a strategy will be made operational. The expression is taken from the founders of Balanced Scorecard, Kaplan & Norton. Other expressions for the same concept are Focus areas or Strategies, or even Critical Success Factor (CSF).
Strategic objectives are created under Perspectives. To create a Strategic objective right click the Perspective to which it belongs in the Model panel and choose Add -> Business object -> Strategic objective.
General
Name - the name of the object. The default name is "Strategic Objective".
Description - an optional text that describes the object. This text displays when you click Description in the drop-down for the object on Web
Filter configuration - create one or several rule sets that define the object types that are relevant to the object and where these object types are located.
Select - indicates the object type to search for.
from - indicates where to search for the selected object type.
Current object - in the object that displays on Web.
If you run the search against organization objects using 'Current object' or 'Parent object', the search won't return any results, as it's not possible for an organization to be the child of a web parent.
Current organization - in the current organization.
Current org. and subs - in the organization that displays on Web and in its suborganizations.
This option is invalid if the from value is a filtered list on an initiative or a risk assessment.
Sub organizations - only in the suborganizations of the organization that displays on Web, but not in the current organization.
Parent object - in the current object's parent object.
Parent level 2 - in the object that's located two levels higher from the current object in the object hierarchy.
Parent level 3 - in the object that's located three levels higher from the current object in the object hierarchy.
Parent level 4 - in the object that's located four levels higher from the current object in the object hierarchy.
Parent level 5 - in the object that's located five levels higher from the current object in the object hierarchy.
Element list - in the list of available elements.
Everywhere - across Corporater BMP.
Forms - in the Forms model.
Include subelements - check for the search to include objects that are children objects to the object type in Select.
This option applies to any from value except 'Everywhere'.
When the object to search for is 'Organization' and 'Include subelements' is selected, the search includes the current organization also.
If "Element list" is selected when searching for Strategic initiatives or Risk assessments, all elements where Affects contains the selected element type will be found.
You can list all Strategic initiatives in the Strategic initiative model using this configuration:
Select Strategic Initiative from Element list
Then select Strategic Initiative and mark Include subelements
You can list all Risk assessments in the same way.
Now define the conditions that are to be met by creating rules. This is done by selecting the desired properties, operations and values from the drop-down lists, e.g. ID = 100, Name contains France, Status = Red
Specify:
Any - an object must meet only one of the rules in a set
All - an object must meet all of the rules in a set
None - an object must not meet any of the rules in a set
To create an additional rule in a set click Add new rule.
To create another rule set click Add new rule set.
For some properties, the second drop-down list contains the "empty" option, so you can search for Strategic initiatives where that property is missing, e.g. Start date, Status, Progress, etc.
Objects that are not visible on the scorecard or that are outside the
Time span will not be included in Filtered lists.
Status & Progress
Status algorithm - the algorithm type used to calculate the status. See Algorithm types for more information. Default for strategic objectives is "Weighted status".
Status - if you selected "Manual status" in Status algorithm , select the status color to show on the web: "Red", "Yellow", "Green", or "None"; this may also be set directly on the web
Status type - click the icon to the right to choose the status configuration to use. New Status types can also be configured here. See Status types for more information.
Inherit status - applies only if you select 'Manual status' for Status algorithm.
If no status value exists for the period, Corporater BMP uses the status value for the previous period.
For Corporater BMP to clear the status value for each period so that users can manually register the status for these periods, deselect the option.
Weight - the weight factor of this object. Indicates the importance an object has in relation to other objects at the same level.
Visibility
Border style - choose the style the object should have:
Border and Title bar
Border only
None
Visible - select how the object should appear on the web:
Visible
Not visible
Only visible for Admin - shows the object on the web only for users with admin user role; this applies everywhere, e.g. breadcrumb, organization tree, page content, Reporter, searching, filtered lists, maps, and Workflow.
This can be useful e.g. when adding new elements to "live" objects.
Only visible when displayed as page - this object will not be visible when it is a child of another object, e.g. a KPI where this alternative is selected will not be visible displayed on a Strategic objective page
Select this alternative on all the KPIs that belong to a Strategic objective and use a Filtered list to make the KPIs appear as a list instead.
Configuration
Go directly to new object - if checked, when a user adds any child object on the web he/she will be taken directly to the new object's page; if not checked the user will stay on the page of the owning (parent) object
Audit
Modified by - the name of the last user to make changes to the object.
Last modified - the date and time when the object was last changed.
Created by - the name of the user who created the object.
Created - the date and time when the object was created.
ID
ID - a unique ID for the object.
By
default, Corporater BMP assigns consecutive numbers to new objects.
You can change the ID to a value of choice that can include either letters or letter and number combinations.
The ID mustn't contain only numbers, include special characters such as ) ( . * } { + < > [ ], or match the name of a default object type in Corporater BMP.
Visibility
Show Top Bar - displays the top bar on the object's page on Web.
Show Menu Bar - displays the menu bar on the object's page on Web.
The menu bar includes the page name, status gauge and trend arrow where applicable, as well as the logo for the current organization.
Show Menu Button - check if you want the button that opens the Options menu for the object to be available on the web page; among other things, the Options menu contains alternatives for editing and deleting. The contents of the Options menu can be configured in Page setup.
Show Tabs - displays the tab bar on the object's page on Web.
Show Icon/Status - select which icon to display in the Title bar. You can choose between:
Table type icon - the standard icon for the object
Status gauge icon - a status gauge used as icon
No icon
Lifetime
Lifetime start - select the first day the object and its available children are valid.
Lifetime end - select the last day the object and its available children are valid.
For more information on how to limit the time period during which an object is available to users, see Time span.
Miscellaneous
YTD enabled - select the object's relation to year-to-date (YTD) calculations.
True - enables YTD calculations for the object.
False - disables YTD calculations for the object.
Inherit - determines the object to use the value of the corresponding property from its parent object.
Period selection enabled - select the availability type of the period selector for this object on Web.
Inherit - applies the same availability type as for the object's parent.
True - displays the selector with each period for the object.
Greater periods only - displays the selector with only periods that are greater than the scorecard period for the object.
False - hides the selector for the object.
Layout
Page setup - click the Page Setup button () and select a Page setup. Note that the Page setup selected here will affect child elements, not the current element itself. New Page setups can be created here; see Shared web items for more information.
Row span - number of rows used by an element (Row layout only)
Column span - number of columns used by an element (Row layout only)
Width - the space to be used by the object as per row layout; the number must be postfixed with the unit to use, e.g. 40%, 100px, 10cm, 4in
The Width property is a string, so any html size units (i.e. "%", "px", "em", "mm", "cm",
"in", "pt") may be used. However, bear in mind that when you set fixed widths on objects and there isn't enough space, some of them will be rendered on the next row. We therefore recommend always using %.
Area - choose the part of the page where you want the object to be placed, Header, Body or Footer, when a Column Layout where Header and/or Footer has been selected is used; see Page setup for more information (Column layout only)
The Area property will only appear if the Tab selected is of type Column, and Header or Footer is enabled in Tab.
Column - the column in a Column layout the object should be placed in (Column layout only)
Tab - click the icon and select the tab in the Page setup on which to display the object. Note that the Page setup to choose from is not the one selected on the current object, but the one on the parent object. The tab must belong to the chosen Page setup. New tabs can be created here; see Shared web items for more information.
See Web Layout for more information on layouts.
Access control
Read accessors - click the Edit button () and authorize one or more users and user groups to view the object on Web.
Add accessors - click the Edit button() and authorize one or more users and user groups to add new objects to the object on Web.
Write accessors - click the Edit button() and authorize one or more users and user groups to edit the object on Web.
Delete accessors - click the Edit button() and authorize one or more users and user groups to delete the object on Web.
Ownership - click the Edit button () and grant ownership of the object to one or more users and user groups.
Users and user groups who own the object have full access rights to it.
Override access profile - select for the object's access control setting to outrank the object's corresponding access settings in profiles.
When you have created one or more Strategic objectives the next step is to create KPIs. Do so by right clicking a Strategic objective and choosing Add -> Business object -> KPI.
